Rev Cooper estimated that there are approximately 67,000 Methodists on the island of Ireland with the great majority, or approximately 55,000 of those were in Northern Ireland. He expressed some surprise at census figures for the Republic which showed Methodist numbers there at 10,000 in 2002 and 12,500 (an increase of 22%) in 2006.
The 2001 census in Northern Ireland found that there were 59,173 Methodists there, or 3.51% of the population. So, according to the official figures North and South, there are 71,373 Methodists on the island of Ireland.
