"THERE is no reason why it won't beta great weekend," said the Met Eireann forecaster yesterday, going a little further in long range forecasting than normal. His confidence is based on the total absence of any weather fronts approaching Ireland between now and Bank Holiday Monday, and the reassuring presence of predominant winds from the southeast.

The present good weather will continue at least until Monday, said Mr John Eagleton of Met Eireann. The high pressure will continue. It will be warmest in the midlands and west. The southeasterly breeze will keep the east coast fresh.

Mr Eagleton said the first indication of a weather front will not appear before Monday, but even then it will be a weak one and unlikely to disturb the pattern of very fine weather. Some mist may be expected, in the early morning, but otherwise we are in for a period of sustained good weather.

The Department of the Marine warned yesterday that people should think about safety, before engaging in any waterbased sport. The Department spokeswoman said common sense suggested that people going out to sea in boats should have radios so that they can signal if they are in difficulties. They should not rely on mobile phones which may not have sufficient range.

The spokeswoman added. "And make sure your boat is in good nick."

Common sense also suggests that people tell shore based friends where they are going and when they intend to be back.

The Department spokesman said that last year the source of most demands for assistance was pleasure craft at sea. They amounted to 334 calls almost as many as from the entire professional fishing fleet.

The number of calls is rising as more people take to leisure pursuits at sea.

The Department of the Marine has produced safety guidelines on swimming, canoeing, windsurfing and general boating. These may be had by calling 1 850 392392.
