ANTI NUCLEAR activists have accused British authorities of "grave irresponsibility" in proceeding with the Sellafield nuclear dump investigations.

A leaked memo from UK Nirex Ltd has cast doubt on the safety of Sellafield for an underground dump, according to Green MEP Ms Patricia McKenna.

Ms McKenna believes the key issue facing the dump concerns whether the movement of ground water through the rock under Sellafield would make radioactive substances in the dump seep into the Irish Sea and end up in the food chain. "Independent evaluation of Britain's nuclear waste plans has been impossible because the authorities have been so secretive," according to Ms McKenna.
