A YOUNG female garda from Limerick’s Moyross in Limerick has won the Gary Sheehan Memorial medal, which is awarded to the best all-round student garda in their year at the Garda College, Templemore, Co Tipperary.
Garda Deirdre O’Doherty was presented with her medal by the Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern at a passing-out ceremony yesterday for 224 newly graduated gardaí.
The 27-year-old from Moyross – which has witnessed serious gangland feuding in Limerick in recent years – studied at Limerick IT and the University of Limerick before joining An Garda Síochána. She will now be stationed in Ennis, Co Clare.
The Commissioner’s medal – awarded for the highest aggregate marks in all academic strands of Garda training – was won by Garda Caroline Taafe. The 27-year-old from Ballintogher, Co Sligo, will now be stationed in Ballina, Co Mayo.
The Templemore Town Council Medal was won by Garda Michael O’Sullivan. The medal is awarded to a student garda for outstanding achievement in and appreciation of the area of social science studies. A native of Greenmount, Cork city, Garda O’Sullivan will now be stationed in Cobh, Co Cork.
