A proposal to introduce a postcode system in the Republic next year is “totally unjustifiable in the current climate”, according to Labour TD Liz McManus. The Government has said it could cost up to €15 million to introduce the system and €2.5 million annually to maintain it.

The party’s spokeswoman on communications said there were “serious questions” about how businesses could cope with the potential cost of updating address databases, stationery and marketing.

Ms McManus has called on Minister for Communications Eamon Ryan to conduct a “rigorous assessment” of the impact on businesses.

A department spokesperson said: “There is widespread support for the introduction of postcodes across public, private and voluntary sectors.”

An Post says it is in favour of the proposed system.
