Prisoner:The SDLP has welcomed the news that Marion McGlinchey, née Price, is to be transferred from prison to hospital in Belfast for medical treatment.

SDLP justice spokesman Alban Maginness said it was a “very positive step” and reiterated his party’s call for the “complete release” of McGlinchey from custody.

Earlier this year, the veteran republican was moved from Maghaberry prison to the all-female Hydebank, near Belfast, also on medical grounds. Having been originally jailed for her part in the IRA bombing of the Old Bailey, in 1973, McGlinchey was released on licence in 1980, on health grounds. That licence was last year revoked by the Northern Secretary after she addressed a dissident republican rally in Derry when a masked man took the stage.
