The Minister for Justice’s "ideological obsession" with deporting people makes him unfit to be in charge of the asylum system, according to the Residents Against Racism (RAR) group.

RAR called for the asylum system to be taken away from the Department of Justice and be run by a body such as the Human Rights Commission.

The group is also concerned about the exploitation of immigrant workers that it blames on the current work permit system.

"The permit is given to the employer, not the worker, which ties you to a single company with no right to change jobs," the group said.

RAR is planning a demonstration at the GPO in Dublin tomorrow for World Refugee Day.

It is calling on the Government to stop the deportations, give asylum seekers the right to work, take the asylum system out of politicians’ hands and take the work permits away from the employer.
