A £7 million programme is to provide modern court facilities in Co Mayo, according to the Courts Service, which manages and maintains court buildings. Last week, Circuit Court Judge Harvey Kenny criticised the conditions in Westport Courthouse.

In a statement, the Courts Service said: "Plans have been completed for a major refurbishment and extension of the courthouse in Castlebar. Construction of a new regional courthouse in the county town is due to commence before June of next year."

The courthouses in Westport and Swinford are to be refurbished, while the one in Belmullet is to be replaced.
