TOURISM in Co Mayo, the home of the Minister for Tourism and Trade, Mr Kenny, may be damaged if an anonymous text insertion on the Internet entitled Mayo Ireland Tourism, Environment and Health, is taken seriously.
Signed only by "Icarus - Environment Watch Ireland", the 50 pages of text urge interested visitors to Co Mayo to look elsewhere for a holiday.
It begins: "Interested in Mayo? Think twice. Contaminated water, over grazed and eroded mountains, polluted rivers and rapidly declining fish stocks, carcinogenic chemicals used by fish farmers and an ocean of domestic garbage. Sounds like a nightmare? This is Co Mayo today."
Mr Kenny, the Mayo county manager, Mr Des Mahon, and chairman, Mr Pat McHugh, have expressed their outrage at the text and have rejected all charges.
The unaccountability of the writer is not for the first time raising the question of legal action against contributors to the Internet. Mayo County Council is interested in knowing more about the anonymous "Icarus" - the Icarus in Greek mythology was drowned after flying too close to the sun.
