The director of the National Council for Educational Awards has called for a review of mathematics teaching.

The director of the National Council for Educational Awards has called for a review of mathematics teaching.

Mr Seamus Purseil said mathematics was "one of the most critical subjects in the curriculum for the development of a technological society". It was taught right through primary and post-primary schools and was a "fundamental part" of third-level technological education. There was a need for better mathematics teaching.

He was speaking at the book launch by the Minister for Education, Mr Martin, of A Mathematics Review, by Dr Sean Cawley, head of the school of science at the Carlow Institute of Technology.
