Aid workers said yesterday that up to 3,00 people had been killed by the second earthquake in northern Afghanistan since February.

Up to 50 villages had been destroyed by the quake which measured up to 7.1 on the Richter scale.

The region was struck by an earthquake in February which killed at least 4,000 people and demolished 14 villages.
