A Belfast man suffered extensive bruising to his arms and legs when four masked men burst into his home in Connaught Street, off the Donegall Road in south Belfast, and beat him with hammers at 8.30 p.m. yesterday.

The man, aged 54, whose speech and hearing are impaired, was recovering in the City Hospital, Belfast.

A 24-year-old Belfast man sustained severe bruising all over his body when six hooded men broke into the gym of Corpus Christi School in west Belfast, where he was playing five-a-side football on Wednesday night.

They threatened the school caretaker before battering the victim with bats and hurley sticks.
