A man who contracted hepatitis C had used intravenous drugs just once at a party 30 years before his death, an inquest has heard, . Brendan Fox (54) of Faughart Road, Crumlin, Dublin, died of liver cancer at Our Lady’s Hospice, Harold’s Cross, Dublin, on December 1st, 2010.
An inquest at the Dublin City Coroner’s Court heard Mr Fox had developed cirrhosis of the liver and was diagnosed with cancer of the liver in April 2010.
The father of four had a number of risk factors for developing cirrhosis of the liver, including a condition called haemochromatosis, where there is too much iron in the liver, and alcohol use. Hepatitis C was also a risk factor for developing cirrhosis. Coroner Dr Brian Farrell recorded a narrative verdict, a summary of the facts of the case.
