A courier who was involved in the robbery of jewellery worth £32,000 and £5,000 cash from a businessman has been jailed for six years by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Gary Hutch (20), Liberty House, Dublin, was on bail at the time of the crime and the six-year term is to run consecutive to a four-year sentence he is already serving for the theft of a motorcycle.

He was convicted of stealing the jewellery and cash from Mr Jeremy Byrne, at Seamount Road, Malahide, on July 11th, 2000.

Judge Dominic Lynch said that although Hutch was not in the house, he knew what was going on and took some of the profits.

The court heard Mr Byrne was in bed with his wife when they woke up to find four masked men in the room, brandishing a shotgun.

They handcuffed Mr Byrne, brought him downstairs and forced him to open his safe.

Det Sgt Feeney said Hutch never entered the house, but acted as the getaway driver.
