A man aged 26 is expected to charged at Dublin District Court this morning with the murder of a woman whose body was found along with a body believed to be that of her husband in their home at Ravensdale Park in East Wall in the city.
The bodies of Mrs Gertrude Dolan (56) and her husband - which had yet to be formally identified last night - were found late on Monday evening. They had been stabbed to death. It is understood that the bodies had been in the house for some time. Det Supt Cormac Gordon, who is leading the investigation, yesterday said that the couple had not been seen in the locality "for over a week."
The alarm was raised on Monday when a man and his brother called gardai saying that two bodies had been discovered. The man who is to be charged with murder of Mrs Dolan went to the Garda early yesterday. The weapon used in the attack has not yet been found, a Garda spokeswoman said.
He was arrested and held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act for some 12 hours before gardai decided to charge him. Gardai are not seeking anyone else in connection with the death of the man, who was believed to be in his 70s.
It is believed the attack arose from a domestic dispute. Gardai do not believe it involved forced entry to the couple's home.
A preliminary post-mortem examination was carried out at the scene yesterday by the deputy State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy.
