The search for a Cork man who fell overboard when his launch capsized in Cork Harbour on Saturday afternoon continued until dark yesterday.
Mr Gerard Spillane (23), of Silver Heights Drive, Mayfield, on Cork's north side, was one of five people on board a 19-foot launch with a powerful outboard engine.
It is understood they were attempting to lay a new mooring in the Monkstown Bay area of Cork Harbour.
The launch capsized, it is believed, having already taken water on board, when a passing pleasure craft caused a swell which helped to destabilise it.
The four other members of the crew, all in their 20s and from the city, were Mr Derek Stanley, of Rochestown; Mr Ray O'Flynn of Magazine Road; Mr Peter Chandler of South Douglas Road; and Mr Derry Cronin of Rochestown Road.
The capsize of the launch was witnessed by a number of people on the Monkstown promenade, and within minutes the emergency services as well as local pleasure craft were alerted.
The four men who survived managed to scramble ashore or were picked up by local boats, and a naval vessel from the nearby Haulbowline base, the Ballycotton lifeboat and a rescue helicopter were at the scene within a short time.
Locals described weather conditions at the time as calm.
The four men who made it to safety were taken to hospital.
