Man rescued off Waterford coast dies in hospital

A 24-year-old man who was rescued by the Coast Guard off the coast of Co Waterford last night has died in hospital.

A 24-year-old man who was rescued by the Coast Guard off the coast of Co Waterford last night has died in hospital.

The man was fishing off rocks in Newtown Cove near Tramore when he was swept out to sea by a wave shortly after 7pm yesterday evening.

He was winched out of the sea by a Coast Guard helicopter and airlifted to Waterford Regional Hospital suffering from hypothermia.

But the man, believed to be from the Waterford area, died later in hospital.
