A man in his forties has been rescued from Deer Island off the Co Clare coast after falling overboard from a fishing vessel.

The man had been lobster fishing alone on board the 26-foot Ceol Na Maraboat off of the island when he fell overboard late yesterday.

The alarm was raised by his wife who contacted the coastguard after her husband failed to return home.

After several attempts to contact the boat failed, the Doolin Coastguard and the Aran Islands lifeboat were dispatched to area.

The man was located and picked up early this morning and brought to Shannon. The man - who is from north Clare - needed no medical attention.
