A Polish man was arrested today after a foreign national suffered severe head injuries in a street attack in Urlingford, Co Kilkenny.

The assault occurred on Main Street in the town at around 1am.

The injured man, also believed to be from Poland, was found lying in the road by gardai. The 30-year-old was taken to St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny for treatment for severe head injuries. He was later transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin for surgery where he is in a critical condition.

Gardai said a man, believed to be in his late 20s, was being detained at Thurles garda station under Section Four of the Criminal Justice Act in connection with the assault.
