A young man was being questioned by gardaí in Galway city last night following an incident outside a pub which left a man in his 40s with serious head injuries.

The injured man was in a critical condition in University College Hospital, Galway, after the incident, which occurred late on Wednesday night outside Doc Watson's pub, Westside shopping centre, when he became involved in an argument.

Gardaí, who are appealing for witnesses, say that the victim was either knocked down or fell and hit his head.

They have appealed to anyone smoking outside the pub between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. to contact them.

The scene was sealed off and examined by technical experts.

The detained man is 18 years old.
