The Garda Ombudsman was called to Co Monaghan yesterday after a crash in which a young man was killed when struck by a speeding car while walking on the main Castleblayney to Ballybay road.

The Garda investigation followed reports that the car which knocked down and killed Vincent Murphy, Cois Locha, Doohamlet, was being pursued at the time by a Garda vehicle.

The driver, who also lives in the area, was being treated last night at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda.
