A man who was killed when he was struck by falling masonry after a van and a car collided on a bridge in Co Cork has been named as Peter O'Sullivan (57), of Ballygriffin, Mallow.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the collision which led to the death of Mr O'Sullivan at Ballygriffin at about 8pm on Thursday.

Mr O'Sullivan was tending dogs which he kept in a pen under an old bridge on the main Mallow-Mitchelstown road when he was struck by the falling masonry after the van and the car collided on the bridge above him and crashed into the side of the structure.

Mr O'Sullivan was found by gardaí when they were called to investigate the collision and he was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was removed to Cork University Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The driver of one of the vehicles was taken to Mallow General Hospital for examination but was not admitted. The second driver was taken to Cork University Hospital, where he received treatment and was detained overnight.

Meanwhile, gardaí in Kanturk in north Cork have begun an investigation into the death of a father of four who was riding a bicycle when he was involved in a fatal collision with a tractor at the entrance to his farmyard at about 1pm yesterday.

The man has been named locally as Peter Daly (54). He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to Cork University Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The Health and Safety Authority is to investigate the circumstances of the collision.

In Co Leitrim, a 58-year-old pedestrian was killed shortly after 10.30pm on Thursday when he was struck by a car outside the village of Dromod Beg.

The victim was last night named as Michael McGarry, from Dromod. Two men who were travelling in the car were questioned by gardaí but were not detained.
