A US judge has sentenced a native of Ethiopia to 10 years in prison after he was convicted of performing genital mutilation on his two-year-old daughter.

It is believed to be the first case of its kind in the United States.

A judge sentenced Khalid Adem to 10 years' imprisonment and five years' probation for aggravated battery and cruelty to children, the Atlanta Journal-Constitutionwebsite reported.

It said he could have received up to 40 years in prison on the charges.

Authorities said Adem circumcised his daughter's clitoris in 2001 using a procedure known as female genital mutilation, which is common in parts of Africa.

Adem's daughter, now seven, testified by videotape during the trial in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

During the trial, Adem, who denied the charges, and the victim's mother blamed each other for the circumcision, the Gwinnett Daily Postwebsite reported.
