A man who stabbed his deaf neighbour three times at a DART station has been jailed for four years by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

George Byrne (32), of Briarfield Road, Kilbarrack, pleaded guilty to stabbing Mr Patrick O'Connell (26), of Briarfield Grove, in the early hours of June 5th, 1997.

Det Supt Michael Finn, of Raheny Garda Station, told prosecuting counsel Mr Robert Barron that, as a result of a dispute earlier that night between two youths, Byrne went home and got a knife. He then met Mr O'Connell on the bridge of Kilbarrack DART station and stabbed him three times. Byrne was assisted by two of his brothers.

Det Supt Finn said the victim, who is deaf and non-speaking, has since made a full recovery.

Judge Frank O'Donnell said he would review the sentence in two years' time. Byrne's brothers are due to be sentenced next year.
