A man was jailed today for 15 years over sex attacks on two women.

Chef Asogan Kanagasabai carried out the assaults on a Dublin woman and a schoolgirl within days of each other last year.

In sentencing, Mr Justice Paul Carney took into account the attacker's threats to kill one of his victims, threats to disfigure her face with a screwdriver, and the filming of the attack on her mobile phone and the threat to put it on the internet.

The judge said if the defendant had had similar previous convictions he would have been facing life behind bars.

Kanagasabai (22), of no fixed address, approached his first victim while she walked home early last year. He linked her arm, told her he had a knife and that he would kill her unless she gave him oral sex. She escaped when a cyclist passed nearby.

Kanagasabai had taken cannabis and ecstasy when he spotted his second victim in a Dublin park just days later. He attacked the schoolgirl in her home, recording the oral rape on her camera phone.

When Kanagasabai was arrested for the second attack, gardaí recovered his victim's phone. She then positively picked him out in an identity parade.

Kanagasabai pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to orally raping the women. He apologised to his victims in court.

In sentencing, Mr Justice Carney said the attacks merited a 20 year sentence, but he took into account Kanagasabai's guilty plea and absence of previous convictions.

He jailed Kanagasabai for 15 years for rape, seven years for threats to kill, and three years for theft to run concurrently.
