Police in Derry are investigating a shooting in the city yesterday in which a man in his 50s was injured.

The man was shot in the lower body by a gunman wearing a motorcycle helmet. The attack took place yesterday evening in a shop in the Waterloo Street area.

The man is being treated in hospital for serious injuries, but police said his wounds are not believed to be life threatening.

Foyle MP and SDLP leader Mark Durkan condemned the shooting.

“The whole community in our city rejects this act of barbarism. Anyone with information should contact the PSNI so that those responsible are brought to justice,” he said last night.

“Our resolve to reject violent attacks remains unaltered, our message to those responsible remains unchanged - you have no support and you are not welcome.”

Police appealed for anyone with information, or who might have seen the gunman fleeing the scene on a motorbike, to contact detectives.
