A 36-year-old man has appeared in court in Mullingar, charged with the murder of an elderly man in the town at the weekend.

Ian Kinahan, of no fixed abode, appeared before Judge John Neilan at Mullingar District Court this afternoon in connection with the death of 82-year-old Mick Creighton, who was found dead in his flat at Belvedere Court on Sunday. He had been badly beaten, a postmortem revealed.

Sergeant Brian Willoughby told the court that Mr Kinahan replied 'not guilty' when the charge was put to him at 3pm today.

Mr Kinahan's application for free legal aid was granted. The court heard he is in receipt of a disability allowance.

The defendant was remanded in custody to Cloverhill prison in Dublin to appear before Mullingar District Court again next Thursday.
