A man is in custody in Spain after being remanded on charges in connection with the deaths of two Irish tourists in a crash on the Costa Blanca yesterday morning.

The man (35) appeared before a local magistrate in Orihuela yesterday afternoon and was formally charged with two counts of causing death by negligence.

Mary and John O’Connell, who were in their mid-40s, from Gorteen, Cahersiveen, had been holidaying near Alicante when they were hit by a car and killed. The couple were retuning home after a concert.

They had recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.

Local civil guard sources said the driver was detained and tested positive for alcohol.
