A man is being questioned in connection with the fatal shooting of a man whose body was found in the front garden of a house in Co Clare this morning.

The man's body was found shortly before 10.30am at O’Gorman Street in Kilrush. The dead man, named locally as Leslie Kenny (27), was from the local area. Neighbours said they heard a gunshot and rushed outside to find the man had been shot.

Gardaí said a 24-year-old man presented himself to gardai shortly before 1pm. He is currently being held in Kilrush Garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act. He can be held for up to 72 hours.

A licensed firearm was recovered at the scene.

The killing is not believed to be gangland-related but thought to be linked to a dispute between the two men.

It is believed Mr Kenny had a drug problem and was shot outside the arrested man’s house.

A Garda spokesman said the scene had been preserved for a Garda technical examination and the State Pathologist’s office was also notified.

Local Fine Gael councillor Ian Lynch said the whole community was in shock.

“Everyone was starting to think about starting their summer’s day, with the kids on holidays," he said. "There were reports of an altercation on the street and then people went out to find one person had been shot.”
