A man was last night being questioned by gardaí in Galway in relation to an incident that has left another man fighting for his life.

The man (22) was arrested in Galway on Sunday night in connection with an assault at Rossaveal pier, Co Galway, early on Sunday morning.

The victim (23), from Barna in Galway, underwent surgery at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin on Sunday night after being transferred there from hospital in Galway.

Gardaí are investigating reports that a hammer may have been used in the assault.

Detention extendedThe man being questioned was arrested under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and his period of detention for questioning was extended yesterday.

Gardaí in Salthill are leading the investigation into the incident, which happened at about 4am on Sunday when more than 100 people assembled at the Connemara pier.

They arrived in about 40 cars from Galway city, where the Galway International Motor Rally was taking place.

People in the south Connemara region reported considerable noise from the cars as they travelled about 35km from the city to Rossaveal.

Garda Supt Noel Kelly yesterday appealed to anyone who was at the pier that morning to contact them.
