A man has been jailed for 10 years by a judge in the Central Criminal Court for the manslaughter of his mother's former lover in the city three years ago.
On July 7th last a jury found Andrew Brennan (28), of St Munchin's Street, St Mary's Park, Limerick not guilty of murder but guilty of the manslaughter of Mr Sean Colbert (53), a father of eight, of Lenihan Avenue, Prospect, Limerick. Mr Colbert was killed outside his home on August 9th, 1996.
Yesterday Mr Justice Quirke told Brennan he was guilty of a "premeditated crime of terror" and that previous sentences for assault had not caused him to reflect before procuring a firearm for the purpose of "violently terrorising another person".
The jury heard that just before the fatal shots were fired by another man, Brennan had shouted at Mr Colbert to "stay away" from his mother.
