A drinking session involving about 20 young people on the steps of Cork's courthouse in Washington Street ended with one man needing 50 stitches in a face wound caused by a broken bottle, Cork Criminal Circuit Court heard yesterday.

Mr James Foley claimed the injury was inflicted by a man with whom he had "had words" earlier in the evening. Mr Mark Cotter, Robins Court, Togher, Cork, was found not guilty of assaulting Mr Foley causing him actual bodily harm on December 1st, 1996.
