A Dublin man has been convicted by a jury of raping a mildly mentally handicapped woman in his home five years ago.

The 32 year old man was remanded in custody for sentence at the Central Criminal Court on February 26th. Mrs Justice McGuinness also requested the preparation of a probation report on him and a victim impact report on the 26 year old woman.

The jury of seven women and five men took almost four to find the man guilty by unanimous verdict of raping and sexually assaulting the woman on May 17th 1991. The man had denied the charges during the six day trial.

The trial heard the victim tell how she went to his home with his then girlfriend and became drunk by consuming cans of Ritz. She fell asleep after lying down in his bed while he and his girlfriend returned downstairs.
