The body of a young man is removed from the scene near the Wicklow Gap yesterday

The man whose body was found dumped on the roadside in Wicklow yesterday morning has been named as 27-year-old Owen McCarthy from Ashwood Park in Clondalkin.

Mr McCarthy's body was discovered by a passing motorist in a gateway near a wooded area at Annalecka Bridge, Ballinagee, on the main Hollywood to Glendalough Road.

Gardaí said they believe Mr McCarthy died at the scene as a result of a gunshot wound to the head.

A Garda spokeswoman said they were treating the case as a murder investigation.

The State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy last night carried out a post mortem examination on the body.

But gardaí said today the results of the post mortem were not being released for operational reasons.
