Man found dead on riverside embankment

A father of 11, member of a prominent Fianna Fáil family, was found dead yesterday on a riverside embankment in Co Donegal.

A father of 11, member of a prominent Fianna Fáil family, was found dead yesterday on a riverside embankment in Co Donegal.

John McGowan (49), from Castlefin, Co Donegal, was a son of Senator Paddy McGowan who died in October 1999.

John McGowan's body was discovered at 11.30am on the banks of the River Finn in Ballybofey.

Gardaí said they do not suspect foul play. A postmortem examination was carried out later at Letterkenny General Hospital.

Mr McGowan, a taxi driver, is believed to have tripped over a low wall and fallen 12 feet on to an embankment at the rear of a car park near Jackson's Hotel.

His children range in age from 27 to seven.
