A man was expected to appear in court in Athlone, Co Westmeath, last night charged in connection with the death of a pensioner near the town.

The body of Mr John Parker (74) was found early yesterday at his home in the village of Glasson, Co Westmeath. It was later removed to Longford-Westmeath General Hospital in Mullingar where the State pathologist, Dr John Harbison, carried out a post-mortem.

The man, in his 40s, was arrested yesterday evening and is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
