Man electrocuted in accident in Co Leitrim

A  man working for an ESB subcontractor has been electrocuted in an accident in Co Leitrim.

A  man working for an ESB subcontractor has been electrocuted in an accident in Co Leitrim.

The 30-year-old man, a South African national, was injured while helping to erect an electricity pole in a field near Carrigallen at around 10.30am.

Builders were moving a pole across the site on a mechanical digger when it came into to contact with high voltage wires.

The man, who was working for a Cavan-based civil engineering firm contracted by the ESB, died almost an hour later.

The Health and Safety Authority, gardaí and the ESB have begun separate enquiries.

An ESB spokesman said: "Our sympathies are with the victim, his family and colleagues. We will co-operate fully with the enquiries and have also launched our own investigation."
