A former public representative is due in court today in relation to an alleged attempt to hire a hitman to kill three people in Cork.

Detectives were last night continuing to question the man about the alleged conspiracy to hire a hitman to kill a garda, a Revenue official and an accountant after gardaí began a criminal investigation into the man’s business dealings.

The man was arrested at his home outside Cork city at around 9am on Thursday under section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, which allows gardaí detain a suspect for up to seven days for questioning.

The man is being held at Gurranebraher Garda station where gardaí are putting evidence to him obtained in the course of their investigation into the alleged conspiracy to kill.

They first learned about the alleged conspiracy about three months ago.
