An apprentice barber who deliberately drove his car at a man on the footpath and caused him injuries has been ordered to carry out 200 hours community service in lieu of 18 months jail.

William (Liam) Sullivan (22) of Beauvale Park, Artane, has been in custody for three months since his conviction by a jury. He was also disqualified in Dublin Circuit Court from driving for three years.

Garda Enda Grogan told prosecuting counsel Mr Garret Orange BL that Mr Derek Gibbons and two friends were walking home on the night of July 15th, 2001 when they encountered Sullivan driving at speed in a wine-coloured car on Skelly's Lane, Artane.

Sullivan drew up close to the three men near the Maxol service station. Words were exchanged and Sullivan threw a wrench from the car which struck Mr Gibbons.

Garda Grogan said Sullivan then drove off fast in the direction of his home and witnesses saw him turn around and drive back towards the roundabout at Artane Shopping Centre.

He drove up on the path, causing one man to jump on to railings for safety, and the second man to jump out of his way on to the road but he struck Mr Gibbons who was hospitalised.
