The 61-year-old victim died at Corvoy, Tullycorbett, Ballybay. The fire was confined to the kitchen area of the house, where the man lived alone.

The incident was discovered at about 2.30pm, but the fire had extinguished itself by that time. Gardaí are treating the blaze as accidental.

A postmortem will take place tomorrow at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.
