A 40-year-old man was shot and killed late last night in a pub on Dublin's Clanbrassil St in what appears to have been a gangland-style murder.

The man has been named as Raymond Sallinger of Eugene Street, Dublin 8.

Shortly before 10 p.m. a masked man walked into the bar, produced a handgun, shot twice at his target, hitting him in the head and chest, and quickly left.

Mr Sallinger was taken to St James's Hospital where he died soon afterwards.

It is believed he was known to the Garda and had only recently returned to Ireland. A murder inquiry has been launched.

On Thursday night last, a man understood to be a major gangland figure died after he was found slumped at the wheel of his taxi in Dublin's city centre.

Niall Mulvihill (57) had been shot four times in the chest. Gardaí believe he was on his way to hospital when he crashed his car into traffic near the Big Tree pub on Dorset Street.

Mulvihill was a "middle-man" who operated cover businesses for drug dealers.
