A 38-year-old Dundalk father-of-one denied being a member of the IRA to gardaí during an interview, the Special Criminal Court was told yesterday.

Det Garda Joe Flanagan was giving evidence on the second day of the trial of Séamus McMahon, Ashbrook, Dundalk, who has pleaded not guilty to membership of an unlawful organisation on October 7th, 2004.

Det Garda Flanagan said that on the day of the alleged offence he was among a group of gardaí who stopped Mr McMahon on an M1 roundabout north of Dundalk town and found ten 9mm bullets wrapped in socks in the driver's pocket of his car.

The trial continues today.
