A man charged with the murder of a law student who told gardaí he had “killed the devil”, made his second appearance before Ennis District Court yesterday since being charged last June.

Joe Heffernan (31), Cappabeg, Barefield, Co Clare, is charged with the murder of Eoin Ryan (21) at Cappabeg, Barefield, on June 7th.

In court, Insp John Galvin applied for a further remand of the accused in custody to extend time for the book of evidence to be served.

Mr Heffernan’s solicitor, Siobhán McMahon, said she was not consenting to the application. Mr Heffernan has been in custody since June 7th.

Mr Heffernan has already been granted legal aid in the case.

Judge John O’Neill yesterday further remanded Mr Heffernan in custody to reappear before Ennis District Court on August 22nd next.
