A man has been charged today by detectives investigating the shooting of a toddler in the nationalist Garvaghy Road area of Portadown.

He is due before Craigavon Magistrates tomorrow, charged with Grievous Bodily Harm with Intent, Possession of a Firearm in suspicious circumstances and Aggravated Burglary.

The two-year-old girl was asleep when she was hit by a bullet during the attack which happened in the early hours of Monday morning.

A gunman had gone into the house at St John's Court and fired several shots into the living room ceiling.

The child suffered groin injuries and was treated in hospital following the incident.

Her father, another man and two other children escaped injury, police said. It is understood the child's pregnant mother was not at home at the time.

The attack is not believed to be sectarian.
