A man who was on the run from an English prison for more than ten years was arrested today in Derry.

Thomas William Callan, 36, originally from Liverpool, escaped from Kirkham Open Prison in Preston after serving one year of a six-year sentence for possession of hard drugs. He was arrested following a joint operation between the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and the Garda.

A spokesman for the PSNI said Callan is believed to have been living in Derry for about two years. He was working across the border in Donegal.

He is believed to have been on day release from jail when he absconded 10 years ago.
