A 22-year-old man was injured in a paramilitary-style assault outside his home in the Creggan area of Derry yesterday morning. The victim was beaten by four masked men who were armed with iron bars and a handgun. A shot was fired into the air during the assault.

Several people were injured in a series of random attacks in Derry's city centre yesterday morning. A young woman needed eight stitches after she was thrown to the ground by three other women outside licensed premises on the Strand Road.

In the same area three women were robbed by a gang of youths brandishing knives. A short distance away a youth was given what an RUC spokesman described as "a bad kicking" in Foyle Street, and in a separate incident a man was assaulted by a group of youths at Earhart Park in the Shantallow area of the city.
