The victim was named locally as Sean Fitzpatrick of Lisnahull Estate in the town. He worked at a convenience store nearby and was well-known locally.

SDLP councillor Vincent Currie said he may have been returning from a night out when he was attacked.

"There is just shock and disbelief in the town, particularly on Easter Sunday morning, it is the last thing you would expect to hear," he said. "This is a quiet residential area and the road would have been very quiet at that time of night."

SDLP MLA Tommy Gallagher said the man had been savagely beaten.

"He had very serious head injuries, to have sustained injuries to the extent that he did he would have had to be attacked for a prolonged period of time or else a weapon was used."
