A man was arrested in Tullamore, Co Offaly in connection with the fatal stabbing of a woman last night, write Genevieve Carbery and Eoghan Mac Connell.
The incident took place at an apartment off High Street at about 7pm.
Emergency services arrived on the scene at about 7.15pm after the alarm was raised by a third party.
They discovered the woman’s body on the floor of the apartment with multiple stab wounds to her stomach and chest.
The man who was also in the apartment was taken to the emergency department of Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore with superficial wounds to his hands, neck and stomach.
His condition was described as not life threatening.
It is understood the dead woman was in her 30s and both the man and woman were originally from Brazil.
The apartment is located at the back of a takeaway on the corner of High Street and Tara Street.
Gardai sealed off the apartment building and the adjacent car park as they examined the scene.
The woman’s body remained on the scene last night. Gardai had contacted the State Pathologist’s Office and the scene is expected to be forensically examined this morning.
