A young man and woman have drowned in Co Cork today.

A young man and woman have drowned in Co Cork today.

The bodies of the pair, understood to be in their early 20s, were discovered early this afternoon in the Awbeg River, a tributary of the Blackwater, at Castletownroche, north Cork.

A Garda statement said the bodies were spotted in the river by a canoeist.

"The bodies were recovered by the fire service and a search of the river is ongoing and the incident is believed to be an accidental drowning," the statement added.

Post mortem examinations are due to take place this evening.

The deaths bring to three the number of people killed in drowning accidents at the weekend. GAA player Aidan McDonnell (25) from Ballina, Co Mayo, drowned yesterday after a punt he had taken with a friend on the River Moy overturned.
