The Kiltegan Fathers are being sued by a man who claims to have been assaulted as a child by a former priest, Peter Kennedy, more than four years after he was removed from active ministry.

The former priest was the subject of the biggest single pay-out in the history of the State this summer when the order paid €325,000 to Mr Brendan Shannon from Co Sligo.

Mr Shannon has said he was sexually abused in 1982 by Kennedy when his father was dying of cancer.

The order removed Kennedy from active ministry in the mid-1980s following persistent complaints of sexual abuse against him.

He went to London, where he continued to be under the supervision of the Kiltegan order.

The alleged assault is believed to have left the child hospitalised in 1989. The family of the child decided not to involve the police at the time.

However, recently they have begun a civil case against the Kiltegan Fathers.

It is just one of a number of civil cases expected against the order because of its former member.

The order has been commended for its speedy resolution of the Shannon case.

Gardaí have taken statements from 18 people alleging sexual assault against the priest, dating from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s.

The suicides of at least two young men have been examined as part of the investigation.

Gardaí are anxious to question Kennedy, but he has left his London address where he was working as a taxi-driver.

He is now believed to be either in Brazil or Mexico, and Interpol has been involved in attempts to locate the former priest.

Extradition proceedings are expected when Kennedy is found.
